possible already breed but not sure when
so i got a female recently but she might have just had a clutch recently (within the bast 3 months) should i try to put a male in with her or just leave it till next year?
Re: possible already breed but not sure when
I was always under the impression that it is best to wait a year between clutches but I am no expert.
Re: possible already breed but not sure when
let her rest for the year..you dont want to overwork/exploit any animals you own/breed cause thats just bad practice..
Re: possible already breed but not sure when
I'm somewhat new to breeding, so dont take me word for word...I would just say that a period of time between laying and starting to breed again is necessary. I cant say how long that period should be but I would not start putting a male with a female until atleast several months after she last layed. Breeding takes a lot out of the female and she must be given ample time to regain her strength and vigor(as well as weight she lost from being off feed).
Re: possible already breed but not sure when
Hi,
I wouldn't start putting a male back in with her till she has at the very least regained back every ounce she lost laying the previous season. Ideally I would also like them to have gained a bit more and be back to top physical condition.
This will take her a lot more than three months.
Also remember you need to quarantine - so if you did put a male with her you would then need to quarantine him as well. So you immediately reduce his output for the year to one clutch.
Since males can cover more than one female that is a bit of a waste.
Also, if she laid in the past three months, then she clearly tends to breed at a different time of year to the others so no matter what you try she may not breed until her internal clock tells her it is time.
Basically I am voting no for mutliple reasons. :)

Ok.. I'm straight.. My girl is 350-400 grams more then she was when I started breading her last year.

If she laid eggs in the last 3 months you have a while before it will do any good to start breeding her again...
I have a bunch females that lay the same time every year...I start breeding them again about 4 months before the last lay date.
