    On or Off..
How does an on/off thermostat work? I understand that it shuts off when it gets past the set point, but does it turn on when it drops below a certain temperature? Are they trustworthy? I'm not planning on breeding and only have one BP... Anyone have any links or brand names they would recommend that are under $50? Same with the UTH.. Any brand recommendations? Thanks everyone!!

yea they are trustworthy but usually have a fairly high margin of error like +/- 5 or more degrees.. its what is used in your house..

if its set to 80 lets say it keeps the heat source on until it gets to 80 and shuts off then it falls to probably 77 (most on off thermostats use a 3 degree drop) then switches back on until the temp reaches 80 again and so on

from what i know about them all in all they are pretty decent thermostats for the money.. they beat the hell out of dimmers and reostats and are 1,000,000x better than nothing at all

when using on/off therms, I use a Ranco. You can pick one up from ebay for like 40 something bucks.
It has a setting that you can have it turn back on when the temp drops 1 degree, (or more, depends on what you set).

I also use the Ranco and I am very pleased with it thus far. I paid $60 for mine from Reptile Basics, it is the unwired one. If you can figure out how to wire it yourself it really is not a bad deal.
