    bedding for rats
I know there is a lot of debate on what kind of bedding people keep their rats and mice on. I have a weanling rat that I am keeping until the next feeding day for one of my snakes. I have it on a mixture of pine and fir that I bought at the store. It seems to be doing okay on it. I have read many threads on here about the possible dangers of keeping rats and mice on pine bedding. I am just curious as to what those of you that breed your own feeders prefer to use.

I prefer Aspen, but it's more expensive than pine. Rodents will do fine on pine, i've known rodent breeders who did it for 20 years with no ill effects. Over time the phenols in Pine will lead to Liver Cancer, but usually it's no issue or worry since they have such a short life span.

Got with whatever you can afford, if you want the best for them, go with aspen. But for $5 you could get over 3 cubic feet of pine as opposed to $15 for 4 cubic feet of aspen.
