I'd give small rats (or fuzzy/weaner rat depending on the size of your snake) a try....but be prepared ahead of time to deal with a refused rat. If you feed live, then you'll have to have something to do with the rat you are left with. You can set it up in its own little cage with food and water (make sure it is chew-proof)...or kill and freeze it...or see (ahead of time) if the pet store will take it back in exchange for store credit if its refused. Some will and some won't.

If you're sure you want to stick with mice...try a different store, for sure. Or buy some small ones, but set them up in their own enclosure with good food and water and grow them up some yourself. Maybe try to stick with all females so you don't have any unwanted breeding...and keep a small rotating stock of growing mice on hand. Or try ordering frozen mice from the big rodent retailers where you choose size by weight.
