2010 Clutch 3 / 2011 Clutch 1 Laid

This morning when I got up I caught my big normal girl in the middle of laying some eggs that were a bit over a week overdue. Checked on her a couple hours later to find her wrapped around 9 eggs. All but one showed veins, and that one wasn't very firm at all, so I won't be surprised if it turns out infertile. Still put it in the incubator with the rest. Since they're technically not due til January 7, I'm calling the clutch both 2010 Clutch 3 and 2011 Clutch 1.

I love this girl; even after laying, she's still nearly 2kg. Hopefully she starts back up eating quickly and puts on some weight so I can start cycling her for late next season (though hopefully not this late again). She was bred to my bumblebee male.

Awesome clutch!! Good luck with the eggs and getting some Bee's. How much does she weigh empty on a normal basis?? Must be over 2,700 if she just laid 9 eggs!

Thanks! I'm almost certain she was over 2900g last I checked before she laid them, but I didn't write it down so I don't have an exact number.

Well the eggs that survived hatched between the 4th and 5th of January. Of the 9, one was infertile. On Jan 4, I opened the incubator to find two spiders and a normal out. One of the spiders had come out prematurely. I tried tying off the umbilicus/yolk sac that was still attached, but he/she ended up pulling more out and I had to put him/her down. Upon cutting the rest of the eggs, I had a spider and a bumblebee dead in egg both due to what appeared to be wrapped umbilicus prior to being ready to hatched. Then I noticed something very wrong with one of the normals in the egg, and it turned out to be extremely deformed and eyeless, so I had to put that one down as well.

Final count on healthy offspring from this clutch was 2 normals and 2 spiders (1 male and 1 female each). Not the best way to start 2011, but both normals have pretty funky patterns, as do the spiders. I did make up for losing the bumblebee by hatching one out of two surviving eggs in the clutch that hatched the next week, however. Three of these guys had their first sheds yesterday and today, and the normal male will soon. I'll get post-shed pics up when I get them taken. Sorry it took me so long to post these. I've been quite busy with the start of the semester.

Woah!! Those are some cool patterns on those normals!! That first one looks like a lava lamp!

I'm sorry you lost so many! :( Not fun... At least you got some gorgeous babies that survived! Good luck with them!

Those normals and that first spider have some really neat patterns for sure! I had the same weird deformed/eyeless babies last season. I don't know what the heck went wrong. They also had split bellies, they were disasters, and 3 were alive..... HORRIBLE first year breeding for me. Hopefully this year will turn out better for us both! :gj:

Yeah, apparently I should have taken pictures of the deformed one, as that's all any of my friends I mentioned the clutch to cared to see. Here I was thinking "nobody wants to see that!" :rolleyes: It was pretty bad though - kinks all down the spine severely deformed jaw, belly split, and eyeless. Wouldn't have made it long at all if it even managed to get out of the egg on its own.

I'll be getting my BS here at the end of April. Unfortunately this will probably be my busiest semester yet...
