    Desert male or female?..
if you have the option of getting a desert ball python.. is it better to get a male.. or a female ?..

For me it all depends on what I already have and what I plan to produce. Figure out what would fit into your plans better. Maybe you want to make a desert clown, then it would be better if you got a female. Maybe you want to make a pastel desert, then it would be best if you got a male.

If it were me, I'd get a female.

that is true.. so actually depends on our target..:)
if i can get a male.. i can experiment with the other females... experiment with other mixtures.. :) then again... i still need more female in for breeding.. :) desert clowns should be very interesting.. :D ohh mann...

I am in the same situation. I'm really geared up for obtaining a desert, and the male/female scenario opened up.

I figured by obtaining a male, it would be ready to reproduce a year sooner than if I got a female. I could mate him with multiple morphs (mostly dom/co-dom and combos), and retain the females I get from those pairings.

We're still relatively young in the desert combo game, so while they are still rather pricey, the options available to those who make the investment should certainly see a reward.

I personally just love the results I've seen so far and want to produce some of these beauties for myself.

I'd go with male. He'd be ready sooner and you can hold back any females you produce, as well as get a head start in projects.

    Just my $0.02. :)

Male - You can run him through multiple females in a year and start way more projects than if you only got a female!

It depends on the quality of your current collection.

If you're low on high-value male breeders, get a male. If you've got a dozen average quality pastel males and only two females, yeah you're a bit male-heavy, but then again you probably still would seriously benefit from a high quality male breeder.

I always believe that if you're going to throw down over $1000 on a female, you're going to benefit greatly if you can spend as much if not more on a male to pair her with.

If you've got at least one combo male, even just a bumblebee, it might be worth it to get a female desert. Triple and quad trait ball pythons that carry the desert trait are almost always pretty spectacular, and powerhouses for breeding potential.
