I have a new pair of Dumerils.

I have a new pair of Dumerils. My female was a rescue snake and a friend of mine that owns a pet store gave me the male to breed with her. Can anybody give me any advice with this? Thanks, Reesy.:O

Not sure what kind of advice you're looking for. I keep mine in a 40 gallon with 80 on the low end and 88 on the high end and a hide box. I don't plan to breed her so can't help you there if that's what you're asking. I mist her when she goes into blue. I've had her a year with no issues whatsoever. They are great animals so congrats on the additions and POST PICS!!! :D

I would like to breed them. They have already locked up several times. I have them cooled down right now to spur the breeding process. However the male hasn't shown any interest in the female in a few days. I tried seperating them for 3 days then reintroducing them as I have been reading to do. But, he still is showing no more interest. I think they are done for the year. I have mine in a 55. The female is 4.5 ft long with an 10 inch girth. The male is a little more than half her size. :O

It usually takes a female Dumerils Boa 3-4 years to reach breeding size. I'd recommend waiting till a female is at least 1500 grams. Some breeders will cool their Dumerils, while others find it isn't necessary. Before cooling your snakes, give them a few weeks to fully digest their last meal and defecate. Don't offer food while the temperatures are dropped. If it isn't warm enough, food won't digest properly in their stomachs. You can gradually reduce the daytime temperatures to about 80 degrees, and the nighttime around 70-75. After a month or two, increase the temperatures to 85 degrees with no nighttime drop. You may notice the male start to "chase" the female around the cage.

You may notice the female ovulate during this time. She will have a very noticeable swelling in her belly that lasts about a day. You'll want to keep track off all sheds so you can figure out which is her Post Ovulation Shed (POS). From this information you can estimate a due date. My data puts a due date about 156 days after ovulation, and 114 days after POS. This can vary depending on temperature. As time goes on, you'll notice the female getting larger in the last 1/3 of her body. You should put the female in her own cage prior to the babies being born.

When the babies are about to come, the female will start crawling around the cage in an odd motion. The babies will be born in a clear egg sac, which they break out of. The babies can shed for the first time moments after being born, up to a few weeks later. Separate the babies into their own cages/plastic shoebox tubs. You can offer fuzzy or hopper mice for their first meal. Some babies will eat their first meal within days after being born, but occasionally they'll hold off for a month or two. Even newborn babies can go quite a long time without eating. Most of the time, they will eat relatively soon

Well, I have them in a 55 gallon tank, heat pad under there hide and a 100 watt red heat lamp over the tank. While both heat sources are on the tank stays constant at 85 degrees. They have a water tub big enough for them both to get in at the same time. I feed F/T once a week. However the male, which was given to me has scars on his back, looks like he was chewed on by a rat. He seems to be afraid of rats. Going to try mice with him this week. I don't have a scale to weigh them with. I would guestimate her at around 10 lbs. As I said earlier she is 4.5 feet in length and 10 inches in girth. The male is 3.5 ft long and 7 inches in girth. Right now I have them on news paper for a substrate(waiting for aspen mulch to come in, had to order it). There hide is a cardboard box with a mouse door cut into it for access. Soon to be buiding one out of 3/4 inch plywwod. thanks for the info. I will get there temps back up.
