newbie here from chicago!!

Hello All! Im getting my first ball python tomorrow, I'm trading two of my cornsnakes for a normal mall ball, that weighs a whopping 164 grams I'm super excited. I set up his tank and everything for him today and I can't wait to get the little guy home! I Have loved reptiles my whole life and just recently started to get into snakes, now that i have my own place! anyways Im looking forward to being an active member on here and any tips/pointers would be amazing!

Yeah welcome and if i can say one thing.... ASK QUESTIONS!!!! The best thing you could do is ask here before every attempting or doing anything just to get a second or in some cases dozens of opinions on it before hand. This website is a wealth of knowledge with printed information, along with all the experienced breeders on here, most of the time what your going through many of us have gone through tons of times.

the only thing i am wondering about what do you think the best substrate is? My basement gets cold in winter where the tank will be set up and i have proper uth and heat emmitter to keep tank warm but wondering if i should just use newspaper like i did with my corns or if i should use like eco earth ive seen or the aspen? thanks :D

Is there anyway to keep him out of the basement? Is the basement heated?

Yeah the warmer the ambient air temperature in the tank, the better off you will be keeping it consistent. If you can move the tank i would.

Honestly though, i like paper towels the best as a substrate. They soak up the urine well and look nice. Plus seeing all your tubs set up with fresh paper towels looks so good and you know your snakes are happy and healthy cause they can lay under it if they feel like!

Unfortunately i live in a two story condo with my brother and my spare room is downstairs! But during winter our heat is on 24/7!! Last winter i didnt have a problem with the bearded dragon tank so i dont see it being a problem!!
