    Thermometer Hygrometer Accuracy
    Hey all,
I have a multi enclosure system controlled by a Herpstat pro. Everything has been super stable for a long time now I check everyday but have had nothing out of the ordinary. Last month I had one of my digital thermometer/Hygrometers produced a odd temp reading I got concerned checked the Herpstat that read where is should be so I checked with a IR meter. It read loosely where I expected as well so I swapped the meter with a second one and found it to read 9 degrees high. I tossed it a bought a second one. I since have decided to check them all so for an afternoon I took all of them out and placed them in a single tupperware box (closed) and it in the closet (very constant temps in there) I found that they spread 4 degrees apart and 12% humidity. :taz:

I have had in the past Rzilla, exoterra, Fluker, and ESU. I still use ESU and Exo with the odd Fluker.

IS There a BETTER more reliable Thermometer/Hygrometer out there?

    Thanks

    Hi,

You had the right idea but didn't take it to the next level.

Pick one to "trust" ( the ones sold in phamacies for human temp taking should be fine ) put them all in the same place as you did before but this time write the difference to the control thermometer on them with a marker or a sticker.

Now you can use all of them. :D

I have a very very good thermometer but no other hygrometers at least one I believe I guess am currently averaging the humidty readings of all and I know the deviation 12% Have a few I believe are high and some low marked (same for the temps) but if they can go off in a year or so will they continue? I checked them all against my good one (lab grade, traceable) do you really have to check them every 6 months ? I was hoping for a better reliable one, at the moment I trust the herpstat much more. I guess I am just frusterated in spending as much as a herpstat nd on Thermometer/Hygrometers only to need to mark how much each one is off by. :(

    Anyway thanks Derek!

That's why i only use the hygrometer function in the beginning of a new enclosure and go by the "good shed" method. If they shed in one piece, it's all good!! I use Accurite thermometer/hygrometer combos and they seem to be fairly accurate when i use a IR temp gun to check over everything. Then again i have all types of caging, so it helps to have an IR temp gun and not have to have 3 thermometers on each tank and a ton of wires.

Hmm Interesting I fount the ir gun style I have to also be a bit flakey as well it reads too small an area. I priced a scanning one but... Too much for me to spend! :O I actually think my problem is actually my problem. I am very fuzzy with the animals in my care as most are but have access to a really good thermometer and that has generated a distrust of the cheap ones on the market. I likely just need to let go and say that with in 2 degrees is ok. I'll pick up an accurite and give it a try. Thanks!
