I use a mixture of playsand and organic potting soil (both from Lowe's for next to nothing) and mix it about 50/50 in a large tub. When the female starts digging, I put her in the lay bin with a heat lamp overhead and let her go to town. Some females lay right on top and lazily cover their eggs while others dig as deep as the go and bury the eggs sea turtle style. They will even pat the dirt down.
After you get to know your female's laying habits, you can adjust your mixture and the depth in the tub. For new layers, I would make it a slope of 12 inches down to 6 inches so she do what she needs to do.
Sometimes they lay right away and sometimes they will sit there for hours and do nothing or dig, fill in the hole, dig, fill in the hole, dig, fill in the hole. I keep my girls in for 2-4 hours (depending on their activity) before cleaning them up and putting them back in their enclosures.
