Thoughts on a space heater

For periods of a week to sometime 2 weeks I have to go underway with my ship. With fall starting and the temperatures are starting to get lower. I was thinking of getting a space heater to help with the ambient temperature of my snake room.

This is what I'm trying to do, do you guys think I could pull this off safely?

A space heater hooked up to a Ranco thermostat set at 78 degrees in the middle of the room on a hardwood floor. Not even close to touching anything in the room.
This seems safe in my mind but I've heard "never leave a space heater unattended" However I believe that is directed to people who leave space-heaters near drapes or cloth furniture.

So I'm looking for opinions from wiser people than myself. Do you think that setup would be safe to leave for a week or 2?

I'd go with an oil filled type, they are supposed to be the safest kind to use. Also make sure it has an Auto cut-off switch if it overheats or gets tipped over. You may pay a little more, but it will help ease your mind.

If possible, have someone you know drop by once a day just to check things out.

It would probably be alright, but I know that "I" would be worrying about it the entire 2 weeks !!

How cold should it get in that room ?

I use a space heater in my room with a built in thermostat and the tip over shut off. No problems all last season and got it going this year already. Hope this helps you out. Good luck!

I also have a heater with built in thermostat! It is a ceramic heater with a fan. It stands on its own and cost me about $80 but it is great! I keep it on all the time so if temps drop below 75 then it kicks on! My snake room is in my basement and I leave this on all year with no problems! I would say invest in a good one with all the safety features and then you shouldn't have a problem!

I believe that there are probably safe space heaters depending on how much you are willing to spend but I will say I couldnt do it. I wont even leave the washer, dryer, dishwasher run while I am not home. Hot items such as blow dryers and stuff can be off but I am so worried I will even unplug them.
Slightly OCD I realize but I wouldnt want to loose all my belonging over a malfunctioning dryer (my clothes are not near as important as the rest of my house)
