    New temporary mouse/asf setup
This is the temporary setup I have going for my mice/asfs. It's working out great so far. I set it all up a few days ago and I already have 6 female asf's that just popped and 4 mice. Lots of babies!!

I bought about 350 mouse lab cages and I'm able to do 1.2 asf or 1.3 mice in each.

The shelf is not finished but will hold 70 tubs.

Once I sell these off, I'm building normal racks but these seem to be working really well so I'm not in a rush. The other tubs also have a special grommet in the side of them for a watering system hookup (I believe) so we will have that going as soon as possible :-)http://img201.imageshack.us/img201/3...ingandtubs.jpg

Nice and simple. Just curious but how much are the mouse cages?

I really like this... I do not want to build a rack so if this is cost effective, I could get these. You could still run a watering system to avoid all the bottles.

Nice little rack. Looks a lot like what I'm probably gonna do later on.

Those professional ones? 35-60 US dollars unless you somehow manage to get them cheap off eBay or CraigsList.

What size are they? Crittercages.com sells the 11"x7" mouse breeding cages for $17. They also have larger more expensive ones too.

You're right Shenzi, It depends on quality. The 15-17.00 ones I THINK are CRAP!

Snake KB, the cages at that website are the EXACT ones from Big Apple. My tubs SEEM larger. I'll get the dimensions when I get home.

I have one of the ones from Big Apple and it's already been CHEWED! I WOULD NEVER trust ASF's in those cages if mice have already done a number to that cage. :colbert:

The ones I got were LAB grade so they are far superior quality :o) I believe these sell for around 50-60 each.

    PICS:

Big Apple Cage (same as the one from crittercages.com) CHEWED (notice how the lid sits ON TOP of the plastic instead of dipping into the tub to prevent chewing)

Big Apple Cage Looks smaller with my two mice

The good tub with the same two mice

My New Tubs, notice how there's a bar that prevents them from chewing the sides of the tub. The big apple/crittercage ones lack this making it easy to chew out.

Some more pics of the good tubs

Thanks for the pics. I've had pretty good luck with my asf's not chewing on my containers when putting a piece of wood in there for them.

that was the MICE who chewed through the cheap tubs, not the asfs :-)

I had them in 10 gallon tanks before putting them into the good tubs. Never had chewing problems in either (but I guess they woudn't have much to chew in the 10 gallons).

I hear wood is hit or miss? Either way, I'd rather not bother with the extra level of annoyance if I don't have to :p
