If your were just getting into breeding...

Hey everyone, havent been on here in awhile. So its been about 6 months or so since I got my first bp. Hes an awesome male Het Hypo. Im getting the urge to start getting into breeding ball pythons, not necessarily the my het hypo, but another morph.

My idea is to either find an adult male and female, or two juveniles. Im a college student, so dont have the budget to go out and get a piebald or anything like that. So Im trying to figure out what morphs to start off with that are a little cheaper to produce some cool babies. The pairs I was thinking of are:
2 het albinos
2 pastels
spider and a pastel

Im trying to get all of your opinions on what morphs you all would start out with if you were just getting into breeding. I know its ultimately up to me and what I like, but I want to know what your opinions are.

So far Garrick has been very helpful and he has some great prices on breeding projects. All the ones you listed he has so check him out and good luck. If you want to start breeding go for males in the morphs and regular females. You can feed breedable females for around $100 on www.kingsnake.com. But if you want to get into one of them projects check out Royal. I'm looking forward to it myself. Another good website for racks and other things that your bp needs is www.reptilebasics.com!

A male Bee, a female pastel and a female pinstripe :gj:

If I was just starting out I would shy away from the Hets for now. My luck with them has been normally if I get lucky I get the morph on the second breeding. The results are 3 to 4 years before you get what you wanted. You end up a lot better off if you just bite the bullet and get the female morph when starting with recessives. A lot of breeders try starting with the Hets and end up discouraged early on.

Pastels are good if your on a buget. A lot of other morphs are available to the buget minded as well. A good buget recessive project currently are ghosts, just make sure you get compatible ones. Cinnamon pastels are also cool projects.

Best bang for the buck and quickest way of getting into breeding would probably be a Male Bee with a pair of Normal breeder size females. If you had a little more you may add a baby female mojave or other female morph to start raising up to breed with the bee. Just make sure you get the breeder size normals about a year before you plan to use them as a lot of the time they will need a year of good feedings to get back to where they need to be for breeding as far as weight.
You could probably get a Male Bee, 2 female breeder size normals, and a baby female Mojave for less than grand if you looked around.

Another morph you may want to look at is a male and female mojave. Wouldn't break the bank and you could get lucys out of it. Just my two cents. Garrick does have some nice deals on hets. I plan on getting a pair of het albino's from him in the future.

Personally if I were in your shoes, I would consider getting a normal female and raising her to breeding weight before I buy a male to breed her with. It can take up to a year and a half to get up to breeding weight, and alot can happen in that amount of time.

If you do get her up to breeding weight and decide you want to breed, I'd get a codom male (The ones Deb listed would be a good pool to choose from) and go from there.

Gloryhoud, that kind of does make me rethink getting two hets. Maybe a female morph and a male het like suggested. Or just go with the two pastels. I really like the look of super pastels.

I also like the idea of the two mojaves. Im surprised no one has really commented on the spider and pastel?

I would look at a male pastel het pied and 2-3 female het pieds. But that's just me. Pastel Pieds are still priced at $4-5K each and I've only seen a couple for sale this year.
