Agreed, you want to keep humidity at about 50 - 60% because that's what the ball pythons were "made" to live in. It's best for them because it's natural for them.
You also want to bump up the humidity during sheds because the snake doesn't need to have the shed on for any long period of time, and both you and the snake don't need the added stress of stuck sheds.

Tattered sheds is why we try to replicate humidity and I bet your humidity in the enclosure is higher than 40% if your getting one piece sheds ;)

I keep my humidity right around 55%. When they are real close to shedding, I move the water bowl closer to the heat source. And that usually puts it around 75%. I didn't do this one time and ended up having to soak her to get all the shed off. So it pays to to keep the humidity at the right levels.
