HELP! Cited for having a python over 8 feet in Las Vegas
So this guy I know got cited here in Las Vegas today for having a python over 8feet. I have NEVER heard of this before and Im fairly certain it's not illegal to own one over 8 feet. If it were the stores out here wouldnt be able to sell them that large. I cant find any information online about this and we need something so when he goes to court he can fight it with proof. Can anyone help?

If you haven't seen the citation in person, you need to. There should be a number or code violation on it. If not, call and ask for one. If they don't have one, there may not be one.

Of course, this may also alert them to you and your friend and attention is not always the best of things.

Call your local Dept. of Animal Control, basically the pound, and ask them for info on keep reptiles in the city as well as county and state. Each could be different.

I'd give Ken Foose a call. He's got that exotic reptile store there, but I can't think of the name of it.

Well animal control where completely unhelpful. They wanted my exact address before they would answer of my questions, which I declined.

Ken's store is Exotic Pets btw :) I'll give him a call and see what he says

Is it a Las Vegas citation or a violation of statewide laws?

municode.com has a section for local ordinances of las vegas, NV, and they don't mention anything about large snakes in the animal subsection

Well there is no violation code written, but it says there is a missing permit. So we called animal control and they are sending out a packet for him to fill out so he can get the right permit. I guess you need a wild animal over 8 feet permit. They said it's easy enough to get. But aparently anything over 6 feet is illegal in Henderson. Crappy for me. But good thing none of my snakes get that big haha

Gotta make sure people aren't going to try to get permits for humans...

I just checked and in the city near me, it's illegal to have any venomous reptile or any snake of the constrictor species...haha... that's funny. But not really.

One of the best ways to protect the hobby is to always stay up to date with your laws. It only takes one person to have an "unpermitted" snake that gets out to make the news and make thousands look bad. I'm not saying your friend is a bad person or anything to that extent, but more than likely miss informed. A lot of places require permits like that and there are a lot of places you can get them without the permit... I know you need to have a permit for the larger snakes here in texas as well, but I also know there are a lot of pet stores you can buy them from that don't check for the permit as well as tons of people that sell them on craigslist and dont ask for the permit!

Did they say they would take the ticket away if he came back with a permit? Here in Texas I'm pretty sure you can get the permit at walmart!
