Re: Am I doing this right?
You will definitely still need a thermostat to control the UTH.

I don't think it is necessary for a thermostat. Those UTHs don't get that hot. Just have it under half of the tank. Here, check this RDR youtube video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dx8FrA1Gzlk

Hi,
Since you don't know the make and model ( either of this one OR the one in that video ) and some of them reach 150f without a thermostat I disagree.
It's one thing to burn the crap out of your own snake and another to advise someone else to do something that might burn theirs if they listen.

Re: Am I doing this right?
Thermostats are not only needed to prevent damage/death from overheating, but it can and will melt (not burn) the plastic tub. I've had this happen before and I'm not the only one by far.
There are cheap thermostats out there ($20-$30) but I really can't remember them by name. However, you can never go wrong with an expensive one.
Re: Am I doing this right?
Are you talking about a permanate set up ? Then you will need all the things that you have mentioned plus the thermostat. If you have a tight budget and only plan on keeping one or two snakes then go with a dimmer switch until you can afford a proper thermostat.
Set up you container now, and you have time to play with your dimmer switch setting, try getting it to stay between 87 and 90, including the night time cool temps. yes even in a house the temp will drop.
Home Dept and Lowes has them for abot 10.47 and they are made to plug into a wall outlet, no rewiring need for you.
Here in Arizona tubs are excellent to maintain humidity, it took me 3 months to decide to use use tubs. Tanks make it eay to see the beautys but tubs are soooo much easier for humidity.
Now if you are talking about just going to the AZ reptile show for a day then I say just a tub with the holes and maybe a large paper bag to make it dark.
Thats my advice from Sonoita, AZ
