    Substrate Question
I'm about to get a pair of hognoses, and I know that they like to burrow. Would shredded paper be an acceptable substrate?

i use aspen just put it in a little thicker, but be warned if you do this push the water bowl all the way down or they may tip it over,

I like paper towels for small (anything under 40 grams or so) hogs and sani-chips for everything else.

I use Carefresh for my colubrids, since I'm allergic to aspen (anything wood-based)... I tried shredded newspaper with my corns, but it gets REALLY stinky and sticky when they pee or spill water. With Carefresh or aspen you can just spot-clean, and the smell doesn't linger - as long as you do complete changes every 3-4 weeks. Paper towels are fine too, since they can make tunnels if you give them a few sheets. But like the shredded paper, it has to be changed completely with any wetness.
