Setting up a new tank, but I'm not sure about the thermostat
Ok, so I'm getting my tank ready for a new snake and I have purchased everything I need for it, but I'm a little confused. When setting up the thermostat for the warm side, should I place the probe directly on top of the UTH or inside the tank, under the substrate directly above the UTH.

I'm confused because it seems like I would want to know what the temperature is of the glass inside but I'm not sure.

    Thanks

You place the thermostat probe directly on the under the tank heat mat, on the outside of the tank. The reason being is that you are not supposed to use tape on the inside of the enclosure. If you were yo place the probe in the tank with out using tape, the snake will only move it, making it useless as it would not be reading the under the tank heat mat temperature.

What if the probe comes with a suction cup just above it? I'll put the temp probe where it will best function, just want to be sure is all.

I put mine on the outside and it works perfectly fine for me. I guess if you feel more comfortable you can put it in the inside just make sure there is a good amount of substrate on the probe so it doesn't bother your snake.

The probe for the thermostat NEVER goes inside the tank.
If the snake moves the probe the thermostat will turn the heat pad up possibly burning the snake.

The probe gets taped so it is against the uth under the tank.
The thermometer probe goes directly on top of the hot spot inside of the tank, under any substrate so you know the temperature of the uth(which should read 90-92 degrees)

Ok, that makes sense, one last question. What type of tape should I use to tape the probe to the UTH? Just regular duct tape, or do I have to buy a special heat tape like foil tape.

Thanks again for all the help. Once again I know I can count on everyone here to give me great advice.

    Foil tape would be best.

Duct tape, packaging tape, it don't matter what type of tape you use to keep the probe against the UTH, as long as it does keep it there.
