    What size lamp?
I have a 40 Gallon breeder and a 20 gallon long. What size ceramic light fixtures would you guys suggest I use, 5inch, 8inch etc...for each.

I would suggest you use a under tank heater for a heat source! I would use the 8 inch on a dimmer so you can control the heat and it will insure you have enough heat to warm the tank for sure! The ceramic heater will dry out your humidity!

I would recommend not using a lamp

Well it depends, what are your ambient air temps without the lamp?

I have to use a lamp because Alaska is just too darn cold!

I usually use it mostly in the winter time because it gets pretty cold.

50/60 watt ceramic for a 20 long and 100 watt for the 40 gal ;)
I'd use a dimmer on which ever one you choose.
