The largest majority of them are very docile and by nature fairly shy, but like anything else they all have differing personalities , heres a care sheet that should get you going as far as understanding bp's and their requirments. http://ball-pythons.net/modules/Sect...warticle&id=59

To answer your first question, if you do all of the research yes its a great first snake. For your second question I can't answer it personally but I think most of the people that breed are in it as a hobby, the money is just a bonus.

I think that they are great. I am half on the fence about them as general pets though. I mean they are awesome, but I've read about limiting handling time, so most of the time they just sit in their enclosures when I'm busy. Which is great it's not a dog or cat that is going to whine when I leave it alone, but when I want something cuddle. >_< Normally I'll just lay down on the bed with one sitting on my stomach, then I start worrying that I'm going to fall asleep and roll over and squish my snake. So I'll put him or her back up. =)
Do your research. I wish I could have done my research, but I wasn't planning on getting snakes. It was a crazy circumstance, and I got them out of a bad situation. I'm glad I have them, but I find out new "fun" things about them all the time.
