How do you know which Hets are what?
When you breed and get hets I know you can put 33 or 60% on what they can possibly be. Are there markers on some hets to know for sure that they are 100%het or is it just a guess? I am looking to breed next year and this has been a question that I have always had. Thanks in advance.

You can have a 50%, 66% or 100% het! Some say het pied have markers but there is het pieds with no markers so the markers don't really mean anything. You need to buy hets from a well known breeder because there is no way of knowning what is het and what is just a normal. You need to breed to hets to known if they are hets or not! A het to a normal produces 50% possible hets which mean half the offspring is het but you can't tell so its a gamble. A het to a het produces 66% posssible hets and homozygous X normal(or het) will produce a 100% het!

When you breed 100% het x 100% het each egg has a chance to be a visual morph.Although sometimes you just miss the odds.So everyone will be a 66% het until proving out :gj:

With 100% het pied to 100% het pied - let's say a clutch is 4 eggs.
Each EGG has a 25% chance of hatching a pied (the animal received a pied gene from each parent)
Each EGG has a 25% chance of hatching a normal (the animal received the normal gene from each parent)
Each EGG has a 50% chance of hatching a het (the animal received a normal gene from one parent and a pied gene from the other parent).
So - let's say that this 4 egg clutch hatches statistically accurate and there is 1 visible pied and 1 normal and 2 hets.
You cannot visually tell the hets from the normal. So - 1 normal plus 2 hets is three wild type babies.
2 out of 3 are 100% het, or 66% of the three. So - all THREE of the normal type have a 66% chance of being the 100% het carrier. That's why normal appearing babies from 100% het to 100% het breedings are called 66% possible hets.
Does that make sense?

Breeding two of the same visual recessives together will give you all visuals.
Breeding two different recessives together will give you double 100% hets. (100% het. for each trait. Then breeding those hets. together, you could produce a double visual recessive, such as the albino piebald.
Breeding a visual recessive to a normal will give you 100% hets.
Breeding two 100% hets. will give you a possibility of a visual, and the others are all 66% hets. until proven out.
Breeding a het. to a normal will give you all 50% hets.

I guess I was wondering how some people will put 100% het on their snakes. This is now easier to understand. I only have 2 hets in my collection due to the fact I got them from a very reputable breeder with a guarentee on them being 100% het for Albino. I have decided to breed 100% visuals on anything I want to make next year. So other than the suprise of Ivory's and BEL's that I might have, I should be very happy. Then the mixing will begin next breeding season. Setting up Punnit squares was a very informative way of looking at things also. Thanks for your info so far too.

Your 100% hets were produced by breeding a visible Albino to another animal (normal, or a co-dom, etc). All the babies would be 100% het, because the Albino carries two copies of the Albino gene and passes one copy to all its offspring. So 100% off the offspring carry one copy of the Albino gene.
