New to this wonderful world,,

Hi guys,

I just got my Male BP yesterday and I'm so happy with him..

what makes me sad that I can't do the right temperature and humidity in the aquarium..

when the heat lamps is on the tempt is 88 F on the hot side and almost 80 on the other side, I'm using a 50 watt lamp, so should i change it to 75 to get to 90-93 degree on the hot side?
and at night after turning the lamp off, the tempt gets to 85 on the hot side?

the other problem is the humidity inside the cage..
it is about 55%.. is it good or I should raise it..
It hard to maintain the perfect humidity because of the lamp,, what should I do?

please guys any information would help me and help my new baby:D

A temp range of 79-88 is fine. And a steady 55% humidity is great. For nighttime use a red bulb...the light won't bother the snake. You can use the red bulb all the time, then you don't have to worry about remembering to switch it.

55% humidity is good. If you can invest in an under-tank heater (UTH) that would solve your problem, so that the heat lamp will only have to maintain the ambient temp and the UTH maintains the hot-side ground temp which you can bump up to 90. The higher the wattage of the lamp, the lower your humidity is going to be.

Congrats and welcome to the wonderful world of BP's...careful they are totally addictive. Tanks are pretty difficult to control heat at times and humidity. For the humidity you can use foil on the screen part to help hold in the humidity. Make sure your substrate is NOT wet or damp constantly though. When they go in shed an easy thing to do is take a wet wash cloth and cover the hot hide...this works really well to boost the humidity during the shedding process.

As far as the heating....you can do the lights but you will find that you are constantly having to check it. Also to be honest BP's do better with belly heat as they use that to digest. Now it doesn't mean you cannot use lights for the time being. When I was new I used them quite a bit at first. Now..I highly recommend eventually getting an under the tank heater. With those you will HAVE to use Thermostat to control it. Some stores will tell you that you don't need it. DO NOT LISTEN!! Those mats or heat tape can spike terribly. You can look for thermostats in places online like reptilebasics.com or spyder robotics. They are a little pricey....but well worth it in the long run. Hope that helps a little!!;)

I just set up a new tank and my hot side temps i can only get to 90 and 80 on the other side but those are good temps anyway, and thats with a UTH.

If you are worried about the lamp drying our the air, make your snake a humid hide :D I use a tupper ware container with the lid on, cut a hole in the side and put some moist moss in it. Works great!

I already have a Under tank heat.. but i'm not sure if i'm using it right,
do I have to put it directory under the bedding or I have to cover it with something?

aim using aspen for bedding..

now I have an UTH, lamp, two hides on the two sides, water bawl, a stick for him to climb..

Hopefully I'm keeping my snake in a good place for him :)

You put your UTH on the outside of the tank,on the bottom,in one corner, or wherever.then your substrate over it inside
