New t-stat, where to put the probe?
So i have a digital thermometer probe under my substrate on inside and its always around 95, should i put the t-stat probe where the other thermometer probe is or on top of my substrate in the hotspot?
Re: New t-stat, where to put the probe?
You should always measure the temps in the hottest spot your snake can be exposed to. So, that is where you want your thermostat probe.
Sure, your substrate might only be 92, but if your snake burrows like mine do, the bottom of the tank or tub might be 98 or more and long term exposure could cause a burn.
You can also place the thermostat probe directly on the heat source, which is what I do. It one less wire for my snakes to bump loose.

But if i put it right at the source, under the substrate, and says its 95, the top of the sub will be abit afew degrees less wont it?
Re: New t-stat, where to put the probe?
Yes it will. My probe is directly on my Flexwatt heat tape. It is set for 93 degrees which puts the hottest spot on my tubs at 90-91. So, just put the probe on the source and like angllady said.....the less wires the better so your BP doesn't jar the probe loose. Put another themometer on the hot spot at the hottest place and set your thermostat to whatever temp you want it to be (88-93 degrees is what most people put it at I believe) so you know about how many degrees off your t-stat is compared to actual temp.

T-stat probes NEVER go inside the enclosure if it's controlling a UTH under the tank.
If the snake moves it you get fried snake, not good.
Tape the t-stat probe under the enclosure against the UTH.
It doesn't matter what the t-stat reads, only what the thermometer reads off the probe that is UNDER the substrate.
Re: New t-stat, where to put the probe?
If you are using a tank or stand alone tub with belly heat, you can mount the thermostat probe like this with aluminum tape...
mount probe to bottom of enclosure...

mount heater over probe...

Hope this helps...

Or you could tape the flexwatt/heat pad to the shelf your tub sits on, no need to put the heat pad on the tub at all.
I'm not saying it's wrong, BUT, there is no need for feet on the tub?
I would never attach the heat pad to the tub, I like to grab the snake, throw it into another tub, grab the tub and spray it down wipe it out, sometimes even hose them out.
