New to Breeding

Hi, Can someone help me? My son and I are going to be new to breeding so some advice would help. This is my first ball I've had. I have had 2 Burms both males so not new to snake handling. Any way my ball is a male so I was told when he was given to me, He's a normal far as I know. Anyway If my son and I pick up a Morph female 1)what should it be to breed with a normal male and 2) is it worth it to breed normal ball's to morphs? Thank you!

1) Depends on what you like and can afford. Codoms will get quickest results. Hets require some back breeding to prove out the offspring.

2) Depends on your opinion of the normal. Some people think they shouldn't be bred because they often go to petstores and, as the cheapest and most widely available ball morph, end up in the hands of people who either don't care for them or dump them when they get bored of them. The same can happen to any pet, but around here, we like balls, and it happens to normals most because there more of them. I think normals are worth it, and since they're relatively cheap and widely available, they can get your breeding off the ground pretty quickly. Just be responsible with what you do with the offspring and try your best to keep them out of the hands of idiots.

I don't have a ton of breeding advice, because I haven't yet, but I say just read read read. Here, there, everywhere. Good luck. Enjoy.

Don't invest in anything till you know what you have for a fact.

While I love normals, I would not personally breed a normal male unless he carried a het or was a dinker. If you get a morph female, you might as well spend a little more and get a morph or het male as well. Keep the normal male as a pet. Just my opinion of course. In the end, it is your decision.

Morph males are generally less expensive. If you do plan to breed and get a morph female, then perhaps picking up a co-dom or dom male would really spice up the project. Just by adding some pastel into any morph female would make things better I would think. But remember, breeding does require you to invest alot of time and money. So it really depends on your budget.
To me, there is nothing wrong or "not worth it" about breeding a pair of normals. Just look around and check for availability. There is always someone willing to buy a normal ball as a pet. It really is a great experience to hatch out your own snakes. Normals are snakes too and they do make great pets :)

Some good advice thank you. Another question if I decide to breed my wyld to a morph on average I would get 1/2wyled and 1/2 morph the I could take that morph probaly a female from the clutch and then breed with a morph male. Am I right

In my opinion breeding normals is a good thing. People always complain about others buying from pet shops. So if there is more normals for sale by breeders=less sales to pet shops! Good luck with your project.

Depends on the morph.

I have a spider bp. That's a dominant morph. If I pair him with a normal, I would get a 50% chance of a spider and a 50% chance of a normal for every egg that is laid.

I also have an albino bp. That's a recessive morph. If I pair him with a normal, I will have all normals that have hidden albino gene (if you put these guys next to a plain normal, you won't be able to tell the difference).

But say I have a super pastel (which I don't). That's a super form of a co-dominant gene. If I pair him with a normal, I would get all regular pastels (not super - the supers are brighter in color).

So, yeah, it really depends on what kind of morph you go with.
