How do you decide what to breed?
Other than the obvious "I breed what I like" comment,

HOW DO YOU DECIDE WHAT PROJECTS TO WORK ON?

I breed what I like too... Ball Pythons.

To pinpoint one particular morph to breed for is very very difficult for me.

    I need an intervention.

How do you decide what to breed for?

Obviously based on what I have available, then it's what I want to make, then its market viability and whether or not I can better invest the animals in to a different project.

I breed based on what I want to produce down the road, what I can afford, and what keeps me interested.

The "keeps me interested" is the biggest thing for me. With cornsnakes there were several morphs that were fairly new and I bought some to stay on the cutting edge, however, I wasn't actually that impressed with the morph and was doing it more for the sake of doing it. It just didn't get me pumped up, so I sold them off and now with bps and corns I think long and hard about if I really like said morph or if its more of a fad.

This way it keeps me engaged and wanting to keep with the hobby.

I usually see a combo that I like, and then go out and buy the parts so I can make the combo myself eventually. Of all of my pairings there are usually only a couple pairings of things that are done purely to sell. Almost everything I breed is getting me closer to one of my long term goals. It helps make it a lot easier for me because I have mostly reccessive stuff. If I had a bunch of codoms I would probably have a lot more problems deciding.

Not that I have a lot of projects or experience, but 1 project kinda developed for me. I bought a butter to breed to my mojo for a lucy in the future. He is also poss het hypo. The next choice was to try to prove him, so I got a 0.1 100% het hypo. That wasn't enough, so now I also have a visual hypo to breed to him. That now has me looking for future projects with these future pairings. This year I only have 1 clutch (my first ever, got nothing last year), but next year I will have 6 or 7 females up to size.
