    Locality Question
    Hello,

I'm thinking about finally getting a true red-tail boa (BCC). I have been wanting one since a kid but just have never got around to it. I think the thing that has held me back is the fact that I don't want a 10' giant on my hands when it's full grown. If anyone has experience with the different localities; are there any specific ones that are your favorite to keep?

I know the Venezuelan and North Brazilian BCC stay fairly small for true red-tails, but the tail coloring does not stay quite as deep red. The Surinams color and pattern is amazing, but they can have regurgitation and weight loss issues, and get on the larger side. Guyana BCC have great coloration with purple hues, but I have heard that they have a bad rep for sometimes being temperamental and some do not do very well in captive conditions. I'm just trying to weigh the pros and cons to decide which may be right for me. Suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks

If you want a BCC that won't be 10' long then get a male. They generally average about 7-8 feet. Out of the BCC's I like the Peruvians most. But my favorite has to be the Argentine boa BCO, and there is also the Peruvian Longicauda BCL. True red tails (BCC) are normally the largest of the species. If you don't think you are ready for one that could easily hit 8-10 feet, then I would suggest starting out with a Central American, Mexican, or Insular Island BCI's. Here are the links to Gus Rentfro, Vin Russo, and Jeff Ronne's websites. They have alot of info and photos of a variety of boa constrictors...

    Thanks,

I currently have a Cay Caulker Boa from Vin Russo and am now thinking of a BCC after learning more about them from his book and various websites. I appreciate the information and links. If I get any locality BCC it will definitely be a male, as they are less massive than females.
