Re: Short Tailed Opossums
I didn't know there was such a thing as a "short tailed" 'possum. How short is the tail? How are they different from their longer-tailed brethren? It's hard to imagine a 'possum of any sort making a good pet...I'd be interested in seeing your pics and hearing more about them!
Re: Short Tailed Opossums
I have kept a 'possum before, but only for a short while (maybe a month) and only because its mother was killed by our dog so we took it in until it got more self sufficient then released it.
I don't know if it was a short tailed or what, it was native to our area.
Re: Short Tailed Opossums
short tailed opossums are a south american species, much smaller than our north american counterparts. They are slightly less common in the pet trade than other exotic mammals (sugar gliders etc) but far from rare.
As far as I know, I haven't heard of any members here at bp.net keeping them, so you might be the first! Post pics please, they're so cute :D

Ahhh...way cuter and looks far more handle-able than our big ol' North American 'possums. :D
Re: Short Tailed Opossums
OH THOSE R ADORABLE! I saw some of those at a reptile show in Illinois about 6 or so years ago. I thought about purchasing one for myself as a pet, but did not. I have a friend that has one, and he is a cutie and has a personality. Although, when he was a baby he was real hissy n not so keen to human contact... I think he was just a scared little baby though. He is awesome now. "looks over at empty rodent cage" Hmmmm...

They are so soft Judy! Their fur kinda reminds me of what a chinchilla feels like.
