Degree in Herpetology?

I am considering getting a bachelor's in wildlife biology and getting a master's in herpetology. I was wondering if anyone else had done this and what kind of a job they have and whats available for someone with a degree like this. Personal experiences or any advice is greatly appreciated :)

Your best bet would to get a job with the NPS or USGS.

I have a friend who's brother is a herpetologist. She has said it is very difficult for him to find work. But now-a-days, who isn't struggling to get work? Im going to college this fall for pre-vet and hope to specialize in exotic species. Maybe if you end up getting the degrees and working at USGS you can actually show them real science and how it works, instead of them making up stuff.:rolleye2:

Where do you go to major in herpetology? I was under the impression that no where in the US had a herpetology degree?

You are correct, its not offered as a degree anywhere here. You go about it by getting a zoology or similar degree and specializing in herps via activities, projects, papers, etc.

Out of curiosity, where are you planning on going? I'm a sophomore Pre-Vet student. :)

Florida university is a good school for herpetology. I have a degree in biology, but never did take the final step to Florida.

My advice would be to send an e-mail to Dave and Tracy Barker at VPI. The are both degreed in the field and have worked at zoos and in many other jobs prior to them being breeders now. Although, they are both still involved in an academic capacity when it comes to writing papers, books, and other pieces of published information. They are very nice people, and I am sure they could give you some advice.
