Yes. Many people (including myself) sometimes need time alone, and do not want to be messed with. It is not out of the norm to just tell your family that you need some time alone.

Every now and then I do, sometimes for weeks I stay cooped up and really not want to be around anyone, because they would just annoy me. It starts to get your loved ones mad, and that just means more time avoiding them. The best thing to do is just suck it up. Forcing yourself to be around people and not talking wont help, but getting into a conversation where you have a good talk about something you like or are interested in really helps get back into the swing of life, because you realize not all is bad.

It actually can be a sign of depression, weather you think it is or not. The deeper you hide inside yourself, or in this case hate people...which I can understand, the harder it is to dig yourself back out.

I've been having the same problem lately. I've never been a very social person, but I'm a lot worse these days. I think its partly due to the death of my best friend last year and the fact that I don't really have any friends that have the same interests/ hobbies. My wife and son are really the only people I feel comfortable around.
