ny herping spots?

hey im looking for a good place to go herping in new york... i havent really been to that many places this spring and last season i had a bad year finding almost nothing.

soooooo, im just wondering if anyone knows of any good places to herp in new york im in longisland so i dont want to travel to far! lol

Unfotunately you are on an island lol. I lived on Staten Island most of my life, they actually have a ton of nature for a little island. You can go to New Jersey maybe and herp the parks there. Or maybe upstate to the mountains. But all in all when I wanted to go herping I always headed south. Coolest things I found in N.Y. were a small colony of Eastern Milksnakes, and some Eastern Fence Lizards that were purposely released like 15 years ago to see if they could survive and the answer is yes they can lol. What kind of stuff are you looking for anyway?

thats cool.. ive not really found anything cool just a couple of garter snakes and some red bellyed newts. im looking for more snakes than anything but everything is welcome lol. i go to staten island one a week and look around in highrock park. but not really find anything.

Just FYI, fishing for herping spots on the internet is usually not very productive. I've said it before but I'll say it again - many herpers that have good spots are hesitant to share these with people. For good reason, too. First of all, they wouldn't want them getting trashed. Secondly, you could just as well be a collector of Crotalus horridus, which I'm sure you're not, but people would still be quiet about spots like hibernacula and stuff.

Google Earth is your friend. Seriously though, I've found stuff using Google Earth.

I totally get your opinion on this. When I was a kid I would collect anything cool that I saw. As I have gotten older, I have gone more toward the photography direction. I wish I had someone to teach me the importance of leaving nature where it is when I was a kid. But agreed, just like fishing no one will give away their hot spots :D
