Mouse Bite

My Spider BP was recently bit about 4 inches below the head on the under belly, while he was constricting. It doesn’t look to bad, don’t see any blood coming out but it is swollen. Are their any preventative measures that I can take?

You can use Neosporin (sp?) without the pain reliever.

just clean it and in a shed or 2 should go away. I watch my snakes feed. every once in awhile the snake grabs the mouse wrong where the mouse can bite. I just put one end of the tongs in the mouth of the mouse until it stops moving.

Yup i do the same thing as don, watch till there is no more movement, in the case of one getting close to a bite i just stick something in the way. Befire i started doing this my snake to bit by a mouse, wasnt' bad at all and you could hardly make out where the bite was. I used a little neosporin and that was that!

I made the mistake of dropping a rat into a tub with a snake and walking away once. The snake was bitten through the eye ball, and on the cheek. The animal made a full recovery due to some steroid cream I got from my vet. You can barely tell he was ever bitten. His eye also seems to work, at least the pupil moves when I'm holding him. When it happened though it was bad. His eye was solid blue, and his face looked like it had been rubbed raw by sandpaper.

When you feed live prey you are taking a risk. The snake isn't always going to wrap it correctly and sometimes this will result in a bite. 9 times out of 10 the bite isn't very bad, but there are those times when your snake may need a vet visit. I would just be precautious and as other people stated, watch your animal until the rat/mouse stops moving. keep something long and metal in your hand in case you need it.

I watch my snakes when feeding live if I get a rascal that fights back I usally just Pinch with tongs although I have had an instance where I had to thump the mouse in the head while the sanke was constricting lucky enough he just thought the mouse was freaky and crushed harder. Either way I would do it again if I had to.

Anyway I dilute a light solution of betadine in water unlit it looks like watered down tea. I use a q-tip and rub on affected area. After that I apply non pain relieving neosporin. Hope this helps...
