Dumeril's Boa vs. Hogg Island Boa

After I get all of my snake care down (I am on the right track, just need to get my ball python feeding), I was hoping to get either a Hogg Island Boa or Dumeril's Boa, and I wanted to see which one you guys prefer and why.

* I don't plan on getting another snake for a while.

theres a size difference between the 2, hoggs being a few foot smaller than dums. id start with the hogg and see how you do with a bigger snake, then move to something bigger.

If you want to start out with something smaller, the Hogg will be best. But if you do truly like a larger snake that is pretty docile then a Dumeril's boa makes the perfect snake IMO.

I have much more experience with Dumeril's so I will mostly talk about that.

Dumeril's are very nice looking and have an amazing pattern. I prefer Dumeril's over any boa, just because of their larger size and docile nature.

A Dumeril's boa female can get about 8 feet at most, mines only about 6 feet or so and full grown. Keep in mind that Dumeril's boas do take a long time to get their full length so you probably won't have a full grown Dumeril's until maybe 5 years of age, especially for a female. Males will get around 6 feet, 7 at the most, but you will find most males around 5-6 feet long.

They don't get terribly large and I would definitely recommend them for a first "larger" species of snake if someone wanted to get into the larger snakes. In my avatar you can see my Dumeril's boa, and for my size she may seem sort of large but she isn't too big. She's a huge puppy dog though:)

It will depend on what you are looking for in a boa. In my opinion, the Dums have a nicer pattern and coloring, but the Hoggs will stay a little smaller. The Dums are burrowing snakes and will spend alot of time hiding, at least mine does. I see my BP out at night more than the Dumerils. If you do not give them hides, then you will need to provide about 2"-3" of substrate for them to burrow in, especially when they are younger, or just give them a couple of hides to hang out in. I don't have any experience with Hoggs but I am happy with my decision to get a Dumerils...:gj:
