Palpating
I am not experienced at this, but when I palpate I am only feeling 1, it's about the size of a small chicken egg. Has anyone else ever had a 1 egg clutch?

Re: Palpating
It is possible to have a 1 egg in a clutch but usually isn't the case. Palpating is very unreliable and you might be suprised when there are 4 or 5 eggs in the clutch when you thought there was less. Palpating takes a lot of practice to get good at and even still it's not perfect.

Re: Palpating
Indeed. It's a huge surprise when you palpate 3 follicles that could be ovulated and end up with an 9 egg clutch, or better yet 11 huge follicles, and end up with a 4 egg clutch.
I'm definitely going to get ultrasound equipment next year. I believe Lynn with Boas and Balls is selling it.

Re: Palpating
I usually wait until about 2 weeks after the pre-lay shed, roughly 1/2 way to laying time. Then I palpate my females. You can get a really good idea by palpating, especially if the girl is holding some big eggs. However, eggs can be top to bottom, so sometimes it is very hard to tell.
I recently palpated a female of mine, and felt 9 eggs, I'm hoping it's more like 10 or 11 so I can have a huge clutch like I see so many other people have, but I'm betting it's going to be 9.
I was close with my first clutch. I palpated 6 and got 7.

Re: Palpating
Palpating is a wonderfully accurate way of telling exactly how many follicles your female is holding. I palpate every female I have to determine whether or not she is developing her follicles and how many. I gives me great insight as to when the female will ovulate as well.
If you are adept at palpating, you can usually feel the exact number of follicles if you are doing it correctly.
That said, once your female ovulates, you cannot feel the follicles as they become eggs and are super mushy. Then it becomes a guessing game.
