Oh boy what did i get my self into

Ok I just picked up a little corn this past weekend at the expo. She is very cute but I don't know that much about them other than the basics. I fed her an ASF pink about 1 week old. She is an October 09 baby. I am not sure how to feed her corectly. She is much smaller than the balls not to mention faster in her movements. Could I get some pointers on corns. Also what should I breed her to to get some cool morphs (long way off). She is a snow montley het stripe. Now for Photos

Colubrids are pretty easy, corns from my knowledge are alot like kings.

You'll notice they are little dumpsters and they eat happily unlike BP's. That are harder to pick up and you have to watch them more when handling but over time they can be tons of fun to handle. I feed mine pinkie mice.


Also the site seems to say 90 for a hot spot and thats to high. 80 is better. I have noticed they often like to get under there water bowls especially when in a shed.


I dunno much about breeding but I'd say just try whatever you think might look cool. one of these days I wanna cross a black motley with a sunkist.

I have her in my ball room ambenit temp is 76-80 depending Do I need a uth for her. I don't want to over heat her. My son wants to get a red color / orange colored male. What are my options?

76-80 is just fine. I keep my corns at room temp, which is about 78-80 during the summer and 65-70 during the winter. So you don't need a UTH.

For food, feed her something that is ~1.5x the widest part of the thickest part of her body. Feed her that once a week until you no longer see a lump. Then move up to a bigger prey size and repeat the process - once a week until you no longer see a lump. And so forth. Stop once you hit large mice. Even if you don't see a lump, they don't need anything more than a large mouse once a week once they're adults.

From the pick it looks like you can see a lump from when she was fed. Whatever you fed her, keep feeding her that until there's no lump right after you feed her. Then move up.

As for a mate, you snake is homozygous for anery and amel. If she's a motley het stripe, that means she has one copy of motley and one copy of stripe. Motley and stripe are on the same locus and are allelic to each other with motley being dominant.

If your sun want's something red and orange, get an amel stripe, maybe an amel stripe het anery. In the F1 this would give you amel motleys het stripe and anery and amel stripes het anery. There are lots of options depending on what you want to make and produce.

Thank you for the reply:) Will you have any of the animals you spoke about available this year? How much do the amel / montleys run. I have been looking but it is still early in the year for the corns.

No, I won't have any amel motleys. I should have some other things that would pair nicely with your snow motley, but if you're looking for something that's red/orange, then I probably can't help you out this year. I'm doing a lot of lavender, anery, and butter stuff this year.

And amel motleys are probably $25-30, amel stripe ~$40-50.

sounds like you're one the right track. I also keep mine at room temp. Also as said earlier, they are dumpsters! They always seem ready for a meal. That's a very pretty lil corn you have there:)

Keep in mind, there are two types of anery in corn snakes. One type when combined with amel makes snow. The other type when combined with amel makes blizard. I forget which is a and which is b though.

Actually there are three now! Amel A, is what makes a snow. Amel B, aka charcoal makes blizzards, and Anery C, aka Cinder/Ashy makes peppermints.

In addition to the amel mentioned by Matthew, I'd like to suggest an okeetee as a possibility for your son. Okeetees have bright reds and oranges, as well as bold black borders. The amel will make a better breeding partner for your snow, but sometimes their reds can be somewhat pinkish, especially as babies, so some boys might not like that.
