Check for mucus in his mouth. Is he like laying with his head raised up?

Have you checked for signs of RI? If you can get the mouth open, take a look for excess mucus, bubbles, etc. Sometimes a snake can breath heavily and it is no reason to panic, but it does not hurt to check for other signs. ANy husbandry problems?

this acctually happened to one of my corn snakes (pablo) and when i took him to the vet the vet looked in his nostrils and found a little piece of the bedding i was using..... i was so suprised to find out that that was making the wistle type noise ..... so put it this way there are endless possibilitys your best bet is always a phone call and a vet visit away...... also do what everyone else is sayig and try getting the little guys mouth open and check for mucus and bubbles resperitory infection (RI) is pretty dangerous...... is he feedinng fine? if not it may be a RI i would take him to the vet if hes not eating....:snake::D GOODLUCK!!

    Could he possibly be hissing?

Since you say you only hear it when you pick him up, and he's also acting skiddish, I'm wondering if he's just not too happy/used to the handling. How long have you had him?

    Good point.
Also, I have found that sometimes snakes breath more heavily when being handled if they are a little scared.
