couple noob bin questions
hey, im transferring my 22'' (eye estimate, haven't "officially"weighed or measured) ball python to a bin from his current glass tank- i recently picked one up at target. its a 28qt, dimensions are 23''x16.25''x6''. is this a good size?
also, how much ventilation should i give him?
as far as a heat mats go, should i just give him 1/4 of the floor area heated, and will this heat the air temp enough with out any other heating system (i use a red light on my glass tank in addition to uth+thermostat, but i have to spray a lot to keep the humidity around 50-60%). without it the ambient air temp woudn't go over 74F.
is there any specific kind or brand of uth that would be recommended, im guessing flexwatt wouldn't be reasonable for just one bin?
thanks!
tim
Re: couple noob bin questions
a 28qt tub should be fine.
Give enough ventilation so your humidity is between 50-60%. I make about 10 holes on each side of the tub.
You want the UTH to cover about 1/3 of the floor area. Flexwatt or a UTH will work. Its up to you. I like flexwatt personally.
If your air temps are lower then 75*, you could get a second UTH or put a small space heater in the room. You can't really use lamps with tubs.

Re: couple noob bin questions
A 28qt should work for now as long as you can at least fit the hides and waterbowl in there. For heating, I always shoot for a UTH size that will cover around 1/3 more or less of the floor space, but never more than 1/2 of it.
For ventilation, I use 2 rows of holes on the long sides. I space them about 2 inches apart and off-set the second row. I just like the way it looks. If you need more holes, you can add more.
I use aluminum tape to hold the thermostat probe and UTH in place. I have my 32 and 41qt tubs set up like this...
