Ever see a male this big?
K so one of my sisters friends just got a BP the other day from a school teacher. It was a class pet but due to PTA complaints they had to get rid of it. So to this girls house it goes! When the girl found out I had one, and was planning on getting more she asked that I Come check the snakes habbitat out.... The teacher deffinatly did her homework, the cage temps were perfect, it came with the accu-rite weather station deal. a heat pad at 93 and a cool hide at 79, 2 hides.. the works I was very happy to see that it was so healthy.
My question is this though, the teacher said that she got it from a breeder a little under 2 years ago, and that it was a male. I couldn't get pics but I weighed the snake out of curiousity (wanted to compare to what my snake will look like in 2 years) and the snake weighed just under 1500 grams.... I'm very inexperianced at this whole size thing, but that seems big for a 2 year old male doesn't it? I was looking at a pastel jungle male thats 4 years old and is only 900 grams. I know the best way to determin sex is to have it checked but I was curious to know if it still could be a male based on its weight.
The feeding schedule has been very constant, its only refused 2 meals that the teacher can remember. Its now eating large rats...
Just thought I'd ask. Thats what happens when you get bored at work. :P
Re: Ever see a male this big?
a ball python ( in my care not gotten tothe large rat stage ( i hope never do lol) I think the largest a pb every needs to be fed is a medium rat and that a very large female. I think mine so fare are all on either full grown asf or small rats ( just over 5 week or so in age.. I do have a2100 gram snake I think a female but not checked yet I need an extra set of hands lol.. I do have pastel male that currently about 1100 grams and that after breeding and refusing food recently .
Re: Ever see a male this big?
1500 is a big boy for 2 years old but not completely unusual.
I have an 08 yellow belly male that is 1200+ grams
I recently sold a 07 male that was 1800 grams.
Some just get BIG :P
Re: Ever see a male this big?
Isn't nature amazing in its variances? If you think of the stereotypical Chinese man, you think of someone somewhat shorter than the typical Anglo man, but then think about Yao Ming.
Someone can spout out about typical this or average (or "normal") that, but there will always be the occasional exceptions.
Re: Ever see a male this big?
Winston, my lemon pastel male has never done a winter fast and only skips a meal or two a year.
He's over 2000 grams, and was probably easily 1500 grams at age 2.
Re: Ever see a male this big?
I have an Oct '08 male who is fed weekly and has refused maybe 3 meals. He is fed a small rat (according to rodent pro's sizing) that usually weighs 60-80g.
His last weigh in was March 31. It was right after a big poop, and he would have been about 1.5 years old -- 1350g.
Re: Ever see a male this big?
I have a male that's over 2200g....no idea how old he is, though, as he came to me from a rescued background.
Re: Ever see a male this big?
WOW! I didn't realize just how big males got, I assumed that 1200-1500 grams was as big as they got, and assumed that if it was 1200 grams at 2 years old it had to be a female. :P Learn something new every day I guess. =D
thanks all for the info!
Re: Ever see a male this big?
Our Pastel male weighed in at 1479g yesterday. Our female, for comparison is 1367g. She is about 6 years old, and he's 3.
Re: Ever see a male this big?
My male Pastel is going to be a year old soon and is 825g. I think he is going be a big boy.
