He needed no encouragement and she was quite receptive.

You know, that's an awfully attractive snake you got there.

Put me down right now for a male.

Damn. Just checked her and she did lay.

24 slugs and 5 good eggs. Sigh.

Oh well, hopefully one of the 5 will be something new. I bred her to a male I produced 18 years ago that has no yellow. He's pretty much just black, white and gray.

I bred him to another female 2 years ago, his first breeding and she laid all slugs. He was also bred to another female this year that's due to lay in the next week or so. I guess she'll determine if he's got some wonky sperm or if I've just been unlucky with him.

    Oh well.

    Ouch, :(

Fingers crossed for the 5 eggs and the next clutch for you. :please:

What's the reproductive lifespan of those?

Sorry to hear about all of those slugs, Wes! You are one of the few people I know actually breeding these guys. I hope you get what your looking for from those 5 good eggs.
Btw, how did you train that FWC to drink from a soda can?

Re: The Biggest Ever, The Greenest and Forbidden Love
Well, the second female laid last night. 4 that are good, 2 that might be good, and 11 slugs. This was her first time.

The male I used this year is 18. He's only been bred once in the last 12 years or so, 2 years ago, and all those eggs, out of another first time girl, were slugs.

So, comparing him to the other male I used to have, the guy who bred anything and had dang near 98% good eggs from whatever girl he was put too, I now wonder if one of these guys is exceptional.

I've bred other males, long ago, and had very good lays and hatches. The male I used this year was an excellent producer way back when. It's interesting.

I've got kings that are the same age or older who breed well. I don't have any old corns, but I do have a wild caught male hognose that has to be at least 20 years old. He's fertile.

I'll give this guy one more chance next year and see if anything is different.

Interesting. Sorry to hear about the slugs, but it's still an interesting problem! I wouldn't initially think that his age would have anything to do with it. Sometimes you can just chalk it up to bad odds. Coincidences are just that, coincidences.

Good luck with the good eggs :D
