And my husband thinks I stay up too late...
I do, honestly. But if I hadn't tonight, my beloved Samus would have been crawling around the house. I saw her chilling on the dining table, so put her away and proceeded to watch another show.
Towards the end of that show, I hear a crash! She had started to get out -again- and had knocked off the paper towels I left on the top of her tub.
It's incredibly confusing. She's never tried to escape before! Is there a reason they just decide to escape their tanks, or did she just do it because she can?
(The top of her tub is now lined with the heaviest books I could find in the house and she appears to have given up, so I am going to bed. Finally.)
Re: And my husband thinks I stay up too late...
I'd take another look at your cage first off, they should not be escaping at all.
Second, they do it because they can. If they can find a way out they usually will. Normally at night, when they're active. If the temps and everything are normal then it's probably just seeing if it can.
Once they know, and are used to their environment and have explored it and have not found escape they seem to settle down. If they keep trying over long periods of time you might want to look into your husbandry, maybe something is a little off.
Good luck.:)
**Edit: I stay up too late too. ;)
Re: And my husband thinks I stay up too late...
Clamp the lid on with binder clips...books don't always work.
Re: And my husband thinks I stay up too late...
Yeah, clips all the way!!! I used to use heavy books as an extra precaution too. But my friend said that she did that for one of her boas. The boa managed to lift the lid and books just enough to get her head out but couldn't maintain that enough to get the rest of her body out or her head back in. She ended up decapitated. :( After I heard that, I ran right out and got a bunch more clips. Probably not a real common occurence, but I'd rather not chance it.

Binder clips all the way. Get the big ones and put 2 on each side. Glad you were up and caught her when you did.

I'm going to go check out new tubs today... the lid on that one seems a little loose, and it is a hand-me-down. And I'll definitely pick up some binder clips. Thanks for the suggestions guys. :)

I use binder clips and luggage straps. They are available at Wal-Mart and maybe Target in the luggage section and looks something like this...

You can also use bunjee cords to wrap around the tubs to hold the lids down...
