Depends, what are you planning on running with it?

    Room heaters?

    Racks/caging?

Herpstat is a great stat...but you really don't need the ND ability.

If you already have a t-stat of some sort (and I would hope you do :)), then save up for the Herpstat. If you want to get a first stat, go with the Ranco and then get the Herpstat when next you can afford it.

Everybody here adores Herpstats. And with good reason I mean they are high quality thermostats.

But I love my rancos. I own a single and double ranco and I'm just not sure I'd trade them for a herpstat. Especially since the double ranco acts as it's own failsafe.

When I get my rack I am definatly connecting it to a double ranco. :D

Thats just one newbs opinion though. Herpstat is awesome to.

I'm building a rack on tuesday and I'm just trying to figure out what thermostat to use.I think I might go with the ranco since this is my first rack. And I would rather put the money towards animals.:D

The Ranco or Johnson will serve you well. They are essentially the same set-up, made by different companies, and cost about the same...
