Ok guys here's the story I get a call today from a disstressed owner saying that she's not sure what to do and the vet doesn't seem to be helping only making it worse. In January this snake was attacked by a rat complimets of a pet shop giving advice yet again.....the owner rushed her to the vet and has done the baytril shots as instructed as well as keeping her warm. Two weeks after the baytril shots were started her face does this.....yes a little mouth rot going on and treating that but need advice on what you think would cause the severe swelling. She is currently in my care while I gather any and all info

I know many of you will say let her go but I really believe there is hope with a little effort she'll never be 100% but she has the will power

    :( Oh my god....

I don't really know what to say to that one...

Maybe an allergic reaction to the baytril? or just a negative reaction?

Do you know how long the swelling has been there?

I think maybe you should find another more qualified vet that can give you a better answer..

    That looks VERY bad..

Go to another vet asap, that looks horrible and can only end badly without proper care. I assume you keep good husbandry?

Best option is to go to another vet, and find out if it's a bad reaction or something mis-diagnosed. :(

    Good luck!

So her face has been swollen like this for around 3 months?

Any reason why something wasn't being done sooner?

Where was she attacked by the rat?

from what I got from the owner she has been scarred since she doesn't have a lot of money and the other rescues around here want to charge insane fees for even just answering questions and the vets are ridiculous she was hesitant to call me and I told her I would do what I could but I wasn't promising anything

I actually had a problem like this, but it started for no apparent reason. Antibiotics reduced it a bit, but once the course was finished, it just stayed that way. The snake was eating again. It took almost a year and a half for the snake's face to look mostly normal again. The only thing a vet can do is surgery to remove the pus (which in reptiles forms a semi-sold gel rather than a liquid), and scans to make sure it's not cancer or a bone infection. The surgery didn't seem like the best option to me--seems like it has more risks than just waiting.
I would have it cultured, and if nothing really comes up, and the snake is eating...observe and see what happens. It LOOKS reddened, so there may be an active infection going on there, and that needs to be treated promptly. Just don't be surprised if eliminating the infection doesn't eliminate the swelling.

Do you have any details on the baytril doses? How much and how often the shots were given?
