    New pics, New flash
Since I had the camera out, I decided to take a few pics using a new flash set up my husband gave me for Christmas. I've been having trouble getting the colors just right, and the white background never looks white, even with the good camera and a light box. I'm doing better with the new set up, I think, but it still needs improvement. The pics on the black background look a bit yellowed to me, but I think the colors are most true on the outdoor pics (overcast day) on artificial grass. (The one pic with the white background is my point and shoot with a light box and a paper towel background.)

I'd say you did a fairly nice job capturing each of your snakes ;) If you have the option on your camera, do a custom white balance (on my camera, it's under the 'Function' menu). You'll usually want to photograph a gray card of some sort, and that usually helps balance out the colors ;) (making the red, green, and blue on a histogram centered). A few look a little overexposed, so choose a quicker shutter speed if you can.

All in all, you captured them wonderfully!!! That bee is just amazing!

Thanks! One day I will carefully read the owner's manual of my Canon 40D and try again, but I'm just using the auto settings for now. I was hoping that the proper setup would obviate the need to learn the custom settings because last time I tried to customize, the pictures were much worse.

I did the same before I started taking photography classes, so no worries ;). Our professors scorn us if we use Auto settings XD But it's a fairly nice feature to take advantage of ;).

You have a really nice camera model, too! What kind of flash do you have?

It's a Speedlite 430 EX II, with a diffuser. One day, many years from now, I'd like to take a photography class.
