I have never owned a helix so I cant say much about them But I do own several herpstat's and herpstat II and I love them they work great. If you are going to just plug flex watt in to the tstat I see no point in getting the grounding one because you wont have any ground ran to the flex watt.

I would put the heat tape to one end so the other end can be the cooler end if you put it in the middle I dont think the temp gradient will work to well but I have never tried it.

no no, you have to have a t-stat with heat tape at all times. doesnt matter which brand your get, just as long as you have one. without a t-stat your heat tape will get way too hot for your snakes. and like previously mentioned, i would run the heat tape side to side along the back of the shelf instead of down the middle. just a thought, but what ever works best for the snakes is whats best.

I use a Johnson 419 and a Helix. The Helix works better but only has three outlets, which won't work if you have four tubs. The Johnson I ordered from Reptile Basics and comes wired with a power strip with six outlets. The Helix provides a constant temp, but the Johnson fluctuates a few degrees. I don't know about Herpstats.
