Hmm, did some searching this morning and realized this isn't news at all. These monitors (commonly called Butaan or Gray's Monitor) have been bred in the Phillipines for the past six or so years. Discovery is a bit behind on their information it seems. Still, they're fascinating animals nonetheless.

Oops, seems I goofed up there. These guys are only closely related to Gray's Monitors, and recently given their own species status as Varanus bitatawa. Here is a more detailed article than the Discovery one: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases...0407104032.htm
