    PE1 Temp Gun
I am just curious for those that have the PE1 Temp Gun, how far from the hot spot (or any other place you're attempting to get a temperature from) do you point the gun?

Reason why I am asking is because I have my Herpstat set to 93 and when I shoot the flexwatt it reads 110~ degrees. Thing is, I place the temp gun directly on the tape and press firmly before pressing the button to get a reading. I am wondering if this is why I am getting such high temperatures.

Stupid question, I know, but I need to know if I am burning my guys. :P

If I remember tight, that little gun has a 1:1 ratio.

So at 1 foot away, your measuring a 12 inch circle.

I always temp gun where I want to measure my temperatures....

Where is your probe? Is the probe measuring the temps of the flexwatt?

I have my probe on my exterior flexwatt, use the temp gun to measure the hot spot on the interior of my 4x2x2 cage, and adjust the temps accordingly if I want to bump up my hot spot temp.

The Herpstat probe is taped onto my flexwatt. I am shooting the flexwatt temperature. I am wondering maybe because of how I shoot the temp is why I am getting such high readings?

Is this in a rack system?

The reason its so high is because for some reason your flexwatt is running at full blast.

Yes this is a rack system. So even though I am pressing (very firmly) onto the flexwatt directly with the temp gun, there should be no reason I am getting a 110~ degree reading?

Here are some pictures. (The Herpstat's at 93 right now however)

Depends on where your thermostat probe is, but yeah its easily possible for Flexwatt to reach 100 degrees if your probe is getting cooled off by ambient air somehow.

Try this if you have an empty slot in your rack.

Put the probe inside the empty tub on the floor above the flexwatt and control temps that way.

The only thing I can think of, now that I see where the probe is, (under the flexwatt in the shelf correct?) is to just dial the thermostat down a bit until you get the desired temps inside the tubs. If its reading 100+ guarantee your tubs are that warm too. Makes sense to me that the heat is rising into the tubs and now downwards into the shelf.

Is the rack in a cold room?

You might try putting something under the probe in the shelf to bump it up against the flexwatt real good.

Thatd give ya a better reading

    Re: PE1 Temp Gun
Actually, the probe is taped directly in the middle of the flexwatt strip, above the flexwatt.

This rack can hold 2 15 qt tubs per shelf, and the probe is in between those two tubs. If that makes sense.

It just doesn't make sense to me how my flexwatt is over 100 degrees when my Herpstat is only set to 93? I thought that wasn't possible?

What makes this even more confusing is that my Marina thermometers are reading around 93 degrees give or take when the probe is taped directly onto the flexwatt. I used these themometers before I had my Temp gun.

The ambient temperature in the room the racks in is usually around 75 degrees.

    Re: PE1 Temp Gun
I would just try and double check to make sure the probe is good and snug.

But it sounds like the temp gun MAY be junk at this point.

Id test it at about 3 inches away with that gun.

Gotta remember too with heat guns is that they dont do TOO well with shiny or reflective surfaces from my understanding. That MAY be whats happening....

    Hard to say.
