alge in water bowl

Hello and good day to all
In My snake cage which is all wood with vents glass door front
my smaller Ball python (Fred) I get alge growth in water bowl
I have a red light for heat on 24/7 high 80s on cool side
96 or so under lamp. cleaned bowl last week hot water
and in a week the green stuff is back. must be feeding off the light

what type of dish are you using? I know with the reptile water dishes you can buy that kind of look like rocks.....I have to change them every couple of days as they get the slimy feel inside of them.

I have heard of ppl using a dog water dish and that working better

I think it has to do with the water. At home all our animals drink city tap water (just like us) and I get no algae. At the shop we only use RO water and we have to bleach the bowls once a week to keep the algae away. (good for cleanlyness anyway.)

I make the effort to change the water daily, before algae grows..

the same thing happens in my bowls. I look at it as just another reason to change the water regularly and keep them clean.

I doubt the algae will hurt your snake, but I'd be concerned that if the algae can grow, what else might be growing that you can't see?

First thing I would do is make sure you have killed the algae. Just washing it until you can't see it won't kill all of it. You will need to use bleach or something else that will kill it.

Once you have killed it off, I bet it won't come back nearly as quickly. To make sure it stays gone, change the water more often and clean it thoroughly each time.

Fresh water every day, and clean the bowl once a week.

crock plastic bowls washed and refilled every 2-3 days...no problems

What she said. Cept I'm lazier and change the water every other day. Your snake does appreciate the fresh water, it's not uncommon for my snakes to come out and drink when presented with fresh water.
