What to put in my display cage?

I am finally getting a rack for my ball pythons. About a year ago I built a nice display cage for my first ball python, and then realized that tubs work out much better for a ball python.

So, as soon as a I get my rack, I will have an open display cage. I am thinking along the lines of some sort of colubrid. Maybe a milk, king, or rat snake? The cage has the same footprint as a 29g aquarium 12x30x16 (LxWxH).

What is a good snake that gets to the appropriate size for a cage this size -- and also one that doesn't mind being on display?

Idk about tank size but GTP are like the most amazing display animals I have ever seen.

Yeah...I have wanted one of those for a while, and I asked about keeping one of them in that forum, and the general consensus was that it is a little small for one of them :(

It is a little small. Have you considered an asian rat? beautiful colors great display animals. They are somewhat shy but the Porphyraceus Breed such as my thai red mountain have abit more courage.


Something to consider. Pro exotics has beautiful rats.

A hognose or Sand boa would also be good in a tank that small.

Before I read that you already had your cage picked, I was going to suggest a baron's racer or blue beauty snake.

I heard GTP's don't mind living pairs (only snake that doesn't). It would be sick to have like a Green and a yellow or orange pair chilling on a branch looking at you, like yea I'm a badass.

I can think of no snake that would be happy in something as small as that.

I know they are often over looked a lot by most people but garter snakes make awesome display animals. They come in a huge variety of species, subspecies, colors, and morphs. They are extremely active too, they don't hide all day like a ball python. they are pretty interactive too and don't mind being in small snakes, probably the most social of all snakes.

I have a black x grey x yellow rat snake cross that is an awesome display animal, no crzy colors but he's interesting. He's out all crawling and climbing most of the time or basking and they get a decent size. So any of the American Rat Snake subspecies could work.

You don't think a hognose or sand boa would be more than happy in a 30' lon aquarium? Hell they rarely break 3 feet to my knowledge.


I will also agree with the other poster garter snakes are amazing and somewhere on this forum a woman has some awesome sticky posts about them.


If you get one though lemme tell you this. No Goldfish, No rosy reds, Guppies, except no substitute. I think silverfish works to. They need to supplement there diet with some kinda worm. HEr post will tell you all.

Have thought about a lizard instead of a snake? There are a number of lizards that could live in that sized enclosure.
