Best tubs to use for DIY rack?

Hey guys, sometime in the next couple weeks I plan on going out and getting the materials needed to build my own snake racks. I am going to make one to start off with for baby/juvenile snakes. What would be the perfect size tubs for a snake under 1000 grams? Also, what are some solid brands of tubs that arnt too expensive that would be good for a DIY rack? Where can I find these tubs to buy?

After I build the rack for smaller snakes, I am planning on building an adult snake rack, I want to keep all of the tubs the same brand so that everything looks nice and set up good. I have seen many people say that 41 quart tubs would be great for adult racks, but I have no idea what brand to purchase.

Any help would be awesome guys.

Sterillite, Iris, Rubbermaid are good brands of tubs. The iris tubs are the most transparent.

A snake under 500g will do best in a 16qt tub, and an adult under 2000g will do fine in a 32qt tub. Big breeder females should be kept in a 42qt tub.

Thank you. Do all of these brands that you mentioned have these sizes? Also, where would I have to go to buy these? I have a walmart, lowes, target and a few other places close to me.

You should be able to find these sizes (or close to them) for each brand. Just shoot for within a few quarts of 16q and 32q.

You should be able to find these at walmart or target, I haven't had much luck finding the shorter tubs at home depot and lowes. They usually only carry the big storage bins.

When you decide on a tub and the size you need, buy all the tubs for the project plus and extra or two. Many tubs change size or shape on a regular basis. :colbert2:

I found some perfect tubs at target.

they have the regular clear sterillite tubs in all sizes.

6 qt tubs - for hatchlings
16 qt tubs - 500 or less grams
32 qt - 2000 or less grams
41 qt - 2000 + gram adults

Thats probably the sizes I am going to use.

My hatchling rack will be 7 shelves and each shelf will hold two 6 qt tubs, my juvy rack will be 6 shelves and each shelf will hold two 16 qt tubs, and my adult rack will most likely be 5-6 shelves with one 41-42 qt tub on each shelf.

I agree get a couple extra tubs in case you crack one. I built my rack so the tubs kept the lids on them and they had the flip up locking handles. this way when in the rack it a nice clean fit and there not enough room for the snake to try and squeeze out and if they try and i have to pull the tub out the tub lid ( not the snake ) gets dragged against the wood. I have heck of a time finding hte 41 quart tubs locallly . I have kept all my snakes inthe same size tub the entire time i have them with no problems. I have more issues with the rescue snakes not eating in the tubs than anything. I also built my adult rack so it 2 tubs a shelf this way I can fit more snakes per shelf and it easier to fit more into a tighter area. I got 2 racks one holds 10 tubs( 12 if I set 2 on tope ) and another one that a littler larger that holds 14 tubs.. and they only like 4ft wide about 2- 2.5 ft deep and a little over 4-5 ft tall. just make sure you use a heavy enough wood for the shelves I used something like 1/4 and they all bow easy so i had to install a divider typ post in the front to support the weight.

I going ot replace the one and if i can replace the shelves only on the other this summer or next and use at least 1/2 plywood ( not the osb stuff).

I like the fact I made the shelves a set size so it easierto make repalcement if I need ( unlike my first one lol were I used too thin of a wood so it all cruved at the shelves cause I cut with a standard saw ) now I use a new table saw lol..

....plus, having a couple extra tubs helps when it's time to change out the tubs for cleaning. Set up one of your spares, move one snake, and cycle through the rest.
