LabDiet 5001

Hello I have been lurking on here for a good long time. I'm not new to reptiles by any means but I am new to rat breeding. My question is this: All i can get is LabDiet 5001 with 23% protein. I know this isn't ideal from what I've been reading but is this completely unacceptable. Prior to this I was giving a local pet stores "house mix" which consisted of what ever dog food bag happen to split open along with corn and seeds and peanuts and other things. This mix gave me no issues but it was very much wasted. So i wanted to go to lab block which is where the 5001 comes in. So 5001 acceptable? should i mix with hog feed or something else?

protein is high....seeds are also high in protein

it would be a real pain IMHO but if that was my only option...I would look into making "rice balls" as a cheap stable and offer the block as a supplement.

The answer depends on what you plan to achieve, how big your setup actually is and how much time and money you plan to invest.

The rice would offer a good stable of carbs and in "ball" form you could easily blend in extra things to supplement.

It is a formulated rodent diet correct ? Made by purina..Should not be an issue,although the protein is a bit high.. Beats the heck out of the other route..:salute:

Just read labels.

Approximately 16% protein
About 4% to 6% fat

No dyes.

Hog feed is great.
Dog food is great.

As long as the label says that it has what you need, and doesn't have what you don't, you are good to go.

I feed mine cheap dog food and they are producing, growing, and looking fine.
