Whats the best substrate for jungle carpets?
What do u think is the best substrate for jungle carpets? I use aspen for my bp & corn snake, but should i use something different for the jcp since it needs a little more humidity?
Re: Whats the best substrate for jungle carpets?
Newspaper.
Also, humidity requirements on most care sheets for jungle carpets are waaaaay overstated. I came across a care sheet that recommended 80-90% humidity once. In most places, that requires heavy doses of misting daily, which is just a great way to get a bacteria-ridden cage.

Ok thanks, i dont like the way newspaper look, so do u suggest aspen?
Re: Whats the best substrate for jungle carpets?
I use Cypress and haven't had any issues. I don't do anything special to raise humidity and always have perfect sheds and haven't noticed any issues.
Re: Whats the best substrate for jungle carpets?
Cypress mulch is fine to use, so is aspen. People normally use newspaper or paper towels because it's easier for them to clean it up, but I prefer the more natural looking substrates and easy spot cleaning.

When your carpet python gets big, you may rethink your substrate.
Kitty is still under 1500 grams and somewhere between 4 and 5 feet. I can't imagine cleaning poop and pee out of aspen or cypress from a big 8 or 9 footer.

Re: Whats the best substrate for jungle carpets?
I used Carefresh bedding for a few weeks, when I first got my JCP (I'm allergic to anything wood-based). But constant cleaning and the risk of impaction, since I feed inside the enclosure, convinced me to switch to paper towels... I use paper towels or newspaper for most of my other snakes, and it's really the easiest! It's also much more sanitary, IMO, since you can see the feces/urate immediately - whereas I'd often miss it for days, even weeks, with the Carefresh.
